Experience Italy’s cultural heritage through art, architecture and ancient ruins. Spend time in the Campania region, traveling along the scenic Amalfi coast to visit historic sites. See the well-preserved ruins of Greek temples and Roman structures at Paestum before venturing to the National Archaeological Museum to learn about the history of the area. In the city of Amalfi, stop to view the Amalfi Duomo and admire the cathedral’s many architectural styles.
Journey back to A.D. 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Embark on a short hike to the top of the volcano for a look inside the crater and panoramic views of the surrounding area. In Pompeii, go on a guided tour of the ancient city, frozen in time by layers of volcanic ash. Get a glimpse of what life was like for the city’s inhabitants by exploring the ruins and visiting the Villa of the Mysteries, which is known for its series of surviving frescoes. Spend a day discovering the excavations of Herculaneum and seeing artifacts at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
All throughout this journey are opportunities to understand the cultural heritage of Italy. As the centerpiece of the Piazza Navona, the Fountain of the Four Rivers contains sculptured figures that represent the four continents recognized by Rome at the time and the obelisk in the middle is a Roman depiction of the Egyptian symbol of power. Just outside of Rome learn gladiator combat, a battle where honor could be restored through death or victory. Likewise, the Colosseum is symbolic of Rome’s culture of entertainment, as this was the largest of Rome’s amphitheaters. Artistic masterpieces known around the world are within the walls of Italy’s museums. Vatican City is decorated lavishly with frescoes and sculptures depicting scenes from the Bible. The Sistine Chapel is covered from ceiling to altar wall in the masterpieces of Michelangelo, including his “Last Judgement” fresco. Each day, students participate in unique history activities and new cultural experiences.
Fly overnight to Rome.
On arrival in Rome, meet up with the Tour Director and continue on to the region of Campania in southern Italy. If time permits, venture into the town named for the siren legends, Sorrento, and hear the haunting singing of the locals luring passersby to their stalls.
Visit the well-preserved ancient ruins at Paestum, where students see the temples and buildings that give insight into the city’s Greco-Roman roots. Explore the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum to learn about ancient art and architecture. Sightsee along the Amalfi Coast and enjoy a panoramic view of the Bay of Salerno while driving to Amalfi. Take time to shop and relax in Amalfi before visiting the Amalfi Duomo, a medieval Roman Catholic Cathedral that incorporates multiple architectural styles.
Begin the day with a hike to the top of Mount Vesuvius. Walk around the crater to see breathtaking views of Pompeii, Naples and the Gulf of Naples. Uncover the ancient remains of the Roman merchant city of Pompeii, captured in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 on a guided tour of this archeological marvel. Just outside of Pompeii, visit the Villa of the Mysteries and view the colorful frescoes and the rest of the preserved structure.
In the morning, depart from Campania to travel to Rome. En route to Rome, stop in Herculaneum, another city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. While there, go on a guided tour of the city’s ancient ruins and excavations. Continue to Naples for a visit the National Archaeological Museum, which contains Greek and Roman sculptures, along with mosaics and sculptures excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Upon arrival in Rome, have dinner at a local restaurant.
Go to gladiator school to practice Roman combat disciplines. On a guided tour, see the symbol of Rome’s eternity, the Colosseum, where gladiator combat took place. Continuing with the guide, explore the ruins of the Roman Forum, which was once the heart of the Roman Empire. Students experience the incredible architecture of the Forum’s magnificent temples, basilicas and triumphal arches. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant this evening.
Journey through the Vatican City on a guided tour of the Vatican Museums, where the most magnificent art collections in the world are on display. At the Sistine Chapel, view Michelangelo’s Old Testament painting that covers the entire ceiling and his Last Judgement fresco on the altar wall. Visit the Catholic pilgrimage site, St. Peter’s Basilica and take in Michelangelo's heart-wrenching sculpture, The Pietà, of Jesus being held by his mother Mary after the crucifiction. Take free time in the afternoon to explore Rome.
Visit the Pantheon to see why it still inspires architects today. Walk over to the Piazza Navona, full of spectacular fountains, among them the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Participate in a group cooking class, where students prepare, cook and eat a traditional Italian meal. After dinner, walk to the Spanish Steps and stop at the Trevi Fountain to toss in a coin to ensure a return to the Eternal City.
Depart from Rome to begin the journey home.
