On the Cyber Seattle program, students are fully immersed in the college experience, staying on the University of Washington (UW) campus for classes, meals and accommodations. This innovative university is celebrated for its STEM programs, historic Collegiate Gothic architecture, and spectacular view of Mount Rainier over Drumheller Fountain. From this setting, students learn the fundamentals of cybersecurity, starting with career paths and culminating in a cyber threat scenario simulation on the final day of classes.
The world of technology is constantly expanding, driving an even greater need for cybersecurity professionals every day. Advancement in this career can start as simply as a technician role and advance to management, engineering or becoming a cybersecurity architect. Since so much private information is stored digitally now, data protection experts are an essential resource. Throughout this program, students learn the basics of international and domestic threats, “internet of things,” artificial intelligence (AI), automation, ethical hacking, encryption and policy in cybersecurity. Discuss cybersecurity techniques and best practices for using social media to keep personal information from getting out to the world.
Fly from San Antonio to Seattle. Upon arrival, transfer to the University of Washington (UW) for an orientation walking tour. After lunch on campus, choose seats in a classroom for the first cybersecurity lesson of the trip, covering career paths and threats to international and domestic security. Check in to the UW residence hall and have dinner in the dining hall.
After breakfast on campus, start the first cybersecurity lesson of the day on the “internet of things,” artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. The afternoon lesson introduces students to ethical hacking and encryption. After dinner in the UW dining hall, go over to Gas Works Park for team games.
Get a firsthand look into the growth potential of cybersecurity careers in Seattle on a visit to a local cybersecurity company. This afternoon, a guest speaker who works in cybersecurity discusses how much this career field is expanding in Seattle and answers students’ questions. In an evening class, learn about the careful balance of ethical standards and policies in cybersecurity.
Start the day with a class on addressing social media cybersecurity risks and techniques to protect information on these platforms. Take time for lunch before a lesson on the future of cybersecurity and how Seattle is leading the charge in this amazing industry. Go bowling at the UW HUB after dinner tonight.
Spend the morning in a cybersecurity class, where students experience a cyber threat scenario and work in groups to find solutions. Once the simulation completes, review the course together and go over any last questions. In the afternoon, depart Seattle and fly home to San Antonio.
