Program Overview

For students dedicated to a future in comic books, the nine-day Experience Comics Vol. 3 program is a truly transformative experience. On an international adventure to Japan, find out why many people call this country the land of manga, a comic genre in the Japanese language and style. Traveling to Tokyo is a necessary pilgrimage for people who are passionate about comics. Gain a global awareness of comic illustration through the lens of Japanese culture, history and art. Take guided tours of museums to view world-renowned art, including “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Katsushika Hokusai. Walk the busy streets of Tokyo, exploring the shops and arcades, decorated with colorful comic illustrations.

Go on a cultural exploration to see the inspiration and creativity behind Japanese art. Learn the history of manga at the Saitama City Manga Museum, which is considered the first manga museum in Japan, with endless collections to view and read. Explore a couple of comic book publishing companies in Tokyo with accompanying educational workshops on the style of Japanese manga. See comic illustration in action at the Suginami Animation Museum, where students can try out digital production and dub famous anime. Go on a foodie tour in Yokohama to create Chicken Ramen by hand at the CUPNOODLES Museum and try different kinds of ramen at a ramen amusement park, Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum. While in Japan, take time to smell the flowers near the temples, shrines and parks along the way.
