From colonial New France to modern Canada, learn about the development of two metropolises in the Québec province, Montréal and Québec City. Walk through the historic heart of Montréal, strolling along cobblestone streets and seeing 17th-century structures. Discover Montréal’s famous urban network connected by subterranean transit systems, called the Underground City. Go sightseeing with a licensed guide to visit popular sites, such as the Old Port, Mount Royal and Notre-Dame Basilica. At the Basilica, take time to admire the beautiful Gothic Revival architecture and history of the building. For the last day in Montréal, visit Olympic Park and explore the four ecosystems of the Americas at the Biodôme.
Journey to Québec City and start with guided sightseeing, learning about the area’s rich French-Canadian history. In the district of Old Québec, students explore the Upper Town neighborhood, see the iconic Le Château Frontenac hotel and walk along the Dufferin Terrace. Travel back in time to the earliest days of Québec while wandering through the streets of Petit-Champlain. On a ghost tour, spend an evening immersed in the legends of the city. Visit the Citadelle of Québec and the Plains of Abraham Museum to experience Québec City’s military past and present. During these visits, see what life was like as a colonial soldier and view artifacts. Take a day trip to the scenic region of Côte-de-Beaupré to view Montmorency Falls and visit the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.
Throughout the program, engage in multiple French language immersion activities. Practice listening and speaking skills while participating in an art-focused workshop at Café Graffiti and a Battle of the Plains of Abraham reenactment activity. Converse with locals at the Grand Marché de Québec and Marché aux Puces Métropolitain markets. Dine on local cuisine throughout the trip, with dinners at a crêperie and a traditional sugar shack.
Upon arrival in Montréal, start the trip with a walking tour of Old Montréal. Stroll along the cobblestone streets of this 17th-century neighborhood and see historic buildings that date back to the time of New France. Continue the walking tour by journeying into the Underground City, Montréal’s pedestrian network of metro stations, businesses and shopping centers. End the day with dinner in Old Montréal.
Spend the day with a licensed guide seeing historic sites, such as the Old Port, Mount Royal and visit Notre-Dame Basilica. Afterwards, engage in an French language immersion workshop at Café Graffiti. The workshop is conducted in French, where students learn about the history of graffiti in Montréal and practice graffiti art by drawing on hats. Enjoy a fun dinner at a crêperie.
In the morning, visit the Biodôme to experience and learn about the four ecosystems found in the Americas. See views of the city from the Montréal Tower Observatory at Olympic Park, the tallest inclined tower in the world. Travel by motorcoach to Québec City. Get acquainted with the city’s history through guided sightseeing of Old Québec, Petit-Champlain, Le Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace and Upper Town. After dinner, embark on an evening ghost tour.
Participate in French language immersion activities at two local markets, Grand Marché de Québec and Marché aux Puces Métropolitain. Students practice their French skills while conversing with locals and vendors. Afterwards, discover the neighborhood of Saint-Roch, exploring the charming boutiques, cafés and attractions. Students continue practicing their French language skills while engaging in a reenactment of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Learn about the siege of Québec, hear illustrative narratives, explore military life and admire collections of artifacts. Venture to a sugar shack to experience traditional Québec cuisine.
Transfer to the scenic region of Côte-de-Beaupré and view Montmorency Falls, a spectacular waterfall that is almost 100 feet higher than Niagara Falls. Visit the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and see the historic shrine that attracts nearly one million visitors every year. Travel back to Québec City for a walking tour of the area. Venture to the top of Cape Diamond, the highest point in the city, to see the Citadelle of Québec and stroll down the Promenade des Gouverneurs boardwalk for wonderful views of the St. Lawrence River.
Filled with fun memories and educational experiences, students depart Québec City to travel home.
On this six-day adventure, students are immersed in the French Canadian language, history and culture. Engage in a reenactment of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham to receive insight into a pivotal moment in Canada’s history. With walking tours of historic neighborhoods, visits to landmarks and museum tours, learn how Canada formed from a French Colony into the country it is today. Students practice their French speaking skills and gain a deeper understanding of French Canadian culture with three language immersion workshops. With a curated curriculum for educators to apply with the program, students are empowered to put their learning into practice before, during and after the trip.
