Program Overview

Explore the natural world on this Pacific Northwest Geology and Astronomy program. Step into a model of a volcano at the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center with a view of the mountain over the wetlands. Wind along the wondrous Columbia River Highway, taking in spectacular scenery at Crown Point and all the way to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum. Discover the geology of volcanoes and dig into the local cultural history at the Lava Lands Visitor Center. On an inspirational exploration of Crater Lake National Park, walk through the landscape shaped by volcanic activity over 7,000 years ago. Stroll through the evergreen trees on a trail in Deschutes National Forest, and stop at Wizard Falls Hatchery to watch fish swimming in the waters below.

Engage in experiential learning activities to gain a deeper understanding of nature and the solar system. Learn geology in context at the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center in an educational activity that leads students through how volcanoes are formed and their impact on the environment. Go back in time while reading the journals from the Lewis & Clark Expedition and participate in interactive workshops on landscape ecology at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum. At the High Desert Museum, students get to see how essential renewable resources are for the future of the Pacific Northwest while exploring the exhibits and interacting with native wildlife. Gaze up to the stars at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory in two astronomy classes on research of the solar system and a night view of the stars by telescope.
