Go on a cultural journey through Central and Southern Spain, from the capital city of Madrid to the Andalusia region. While traveling through the Spanish countryside, visit significant sites, landmarks and monuments to learn about the region’s extensive history. Discover the intricacies of the architectural styles throughout Spain, at cathedrals, palaces, churches and more. Gain a deeper understanding of European art at a national art museum. Throughout the trip, participate in cultural experiences, such as watching a flamenco show, eating local cuisine and viewing traditional jewelry- and sword-making practices.
Start the adventure in Toledo, an ancient city that’s known for its cultural and monumental heritage. Zipline over the city for a unique viewpoint on the architecture and interact with locals during free time. Continue on to Granada, where students learn about the Moorish period while visiting the oldest sections of the city and on a guided tour of the Alhambra. Venture into the mountains of Andalusia to spend a day exploring Ronda, a beautiful city that sits atop a deep canyon.
Experience more historic neighborhoods and local traditions in Seville and Córdoba. Walk through the cities’ old Jewish quarters and gain insight into the various religious communities that have inhabited the areas throughout the centuries. Visit notable sites in Seville, such as the Seville Cathedral, Royal Alcázar of Seville and the scenic gardens of Parque de María Luisa. Discover the renowned Moorish architecture of the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba, a cathedral that was once a mosque. End the trip in Madrid, where students learn about art and view various architectural sites all around the city. As Spain’s capital, Madrid is full of wonderful sites, including the popular Plaza Mayor, the Palacio Real, Gran Vía and the Puerta de Alcalá.
Depart from home and fly overnight to Madrid.
Upon arrival in Madrid, meet up with the Tour Director and travel to Toledo. Sightsee on a walking tour to experience the city’s rich history and charm. Explore the Toledo Cathedral and learn about the Gothic and Mudéjar styles of architecture.
Start the trip at the Iglesia de Santo Tomé, an example of 12th-century Mudéjar architecture, and view the Renaissance painting by El Greco, “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.” Enjoy free time to watch the traditional jewelry- and sword-making practices of Toledo, followed by a zipline adventure through the city. Travel to Granada, a city in Southern Spain with strong Moorish heritage. In the evening, stroll through the oldest section of Granada, Albaicín, and enjoy a view of the Alhambra from San Nícolas Church.
Go on a guided tour of the Alhambra to learn about the history of the ancient palace fortress and its Moorish architecture. While there, visit the Generalife and its gardens. This summer palace was specifically designed as a place of relaxation for the royalty of the Alhambra. Spend time conversing with locals, wandering through the craft shops and tasting the traditional churros con chocolate at the Alcaicería market. Afterwards, visit the Capilla Real de Granada to view the tombs of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, two of Spain’s most influential monarchs.
In the morning, leave Granada and travel to Seville, the birthplace of flamenco. En route to Seville, journey into the mountains to stop in the clifftop city of Ronda. While there, take a walking tour through the city’s Pueblo Blanco village to see many historic sites and landmarks. Arrive in Seville in the evening.
Take a morning walking tour through the neighborhood of Santa Cruz, Seville’s former Jewish quarter. Continue to the Seville Cathedral and ascend the Giralda. Once part of a 12th-century mosque, the Giralda was incorporated into the cathedral as its bell tower. Upon entering the cathedral, view the Treasury, Capilla Mayor and the Tomb of Christopher Columbus. Visit the Royal Alcázar of Seville, the royal palace that features Moorish, Mudéjar and Gothic architectural styles. Explore the Parque de María Luisa, from the beautiful gardens to the Plaza de España. End the day watching an authentic flamenco show.
Begin traveling to Madrid and stop in the city of Córdoba. Learn about the history of the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba on a visit where students admire the building’s exquisite features. Discover the city’s ancient Jewish quarter, Judería de Córdoba. Walk through the winding streets and experience the neighborhood’s various cultural influences throughout the centuries. Continue the scenic drive through Andalusia and arrive in Madrid for the night.
Spend time at the Plaza de España, a large public square and home to the iconic Cervantes Monument, before taking a guided tour of the Palacio Real. Explore the official residence of the Spanish royal family while learning about the renowned works of art, incredible architecture and interior decorations of the palace’s ceremonial rooms. While there, take time to see the Royal Pharmacy and relax in the Plaza de la Amería. See the Puerta de Alcalá, an 18th-century monumental gate, and walk along the Calle de Alcalá to the Plaza de Cibeles, where students enjoy the beautiful marble fountain of the Roman goddess Cybele. Dive into European art history with a guided tour of the Museo del Prado, Spain’s national art museum. Time permitting, visit El Retiro Park.
Students depart from Madrid to fly home, ready to share their wonderful experiences with family and friends.
During this nine-day journey in Spain, students are introduced to centuries of Spanish history and cultural experiences. Visit a multitude of significant sites, including the Toledo Cathedral, Alhambra and Royal Alcázar of Seville, to learn about Moorish, Mudéjar and Gothic architectural styles. Explore the Museo del Prado to gain a deeper understanding of European art and the influence of some of Spain’s most famous artists. Experience Spanish culture while walking through the Alcaicería market and watching an authentic flamenco show. Students are encouraged to think critically about Spain’s historical development as a country and its cultural impact on the world. With a curated curriculum for educators to apply with the program, students are empowered to put their learning into practice before, during and after the trip.
